APX Ophthalmology Ltd. is a privately held company that has developed a novel pupil Expander to provide surgeons with effective pupil dilation, comfortable surgical performance and a high safety profile, in eyes with small pupils or floppy iris (IFIS).
The main techniques currently exercised to manage small pupils include:
- Pupil stretching.
- Iris hooks.
- Pupillary rings.
The goal of developing a different type of pupil dilator was primarily to create a device that is fast and easy to insert and remove, require no intraocular manipulations, provide adequate pupil size, but also does not interfere with surgery. We developed and tested various models and designs of pupil expanders, many of them were potentially practical; however, the most efficient design was a scissor-like device with blunt rounded terminal tips on the internal side and a Nitinol spring on its outer side.
The APX technology has created a safe, easy-to-use device, requiring minimal insertion and removal time, and does not impede surgical instruments within the surgical field.
APX Ophthalmology Ltd. was founded by experienced Ophthalmology and bioengineering entrepreneurs.
